Flu vaccination service

What is flu?

Flu is a highly infectious acute respiratory tract disease caused by the influenza virus.

Epidemics occur mainly in the winter months and the virus commonly spreads through close contact with those infected.

In healthy individuals it is usually a self-limiting illness with most people recovering between two and seven days. However, in some it can lead to complications such as pneumonia or worsening of pre-existing medical conditions such as heart disease, asthma and diabetes.

What are flu symptoms?

  • Fever
  • Headache
  • Chills
  • Cough
  • Sore throat
  • Runny nose or blocked nose
  • Loss of appetite
  • Diarrhoea and vomiting
  • Tiredness
  • Congestion
  • General body aches

How to treat the flu

If you are otherwise fit and healthy you should rest, keep warm and drink plenty of water to avoid getting dehydrated. You can also take pain killers like paracetamol or ibuprofen to relieve pain and discomfort.

Most people generally improve within seven days. However, please see your GP if your symptoms get worse or last longer than a week.

You should also see your GP if you are at higher risk of developing complications; for example if you have heart disease, respiratory disease, diabetes, a weakened immune system, pregnant and over 65 years of age.

Flu vaccination

The flu vaccine is effective and can save lives.

The WHO (World Health Organisation) monitors influenza viruses throughout the world and every year makes recommendations about which strains to include in the vaccines for the coming winter in the northern and southern hemispheres.

It takes 10 - 14 days for immunity to develop.

At Vital Wellness Clinic we offer the Quadrivalent influenza vaccine, which contains four strains of the influenza virus (the three strains recommended by WHO as well as the additional B virus.)

Common side effects

The vaccine is generally well tolerated. Most reactions occur withing the first 3 days after vaccinations and often resolve spontaneously 1-3 days after onset.

These include:

  • Headache
  • Muscle aches
  • Generally feeling unwell
  • Swelling and/or redness at the injection site
  • Fever

More information and other uncommon reactions from the quadrivalent vaccine can be found at: http://www.medicines.org.uk/emc/PIL.33705.latest.pdf
